How I Discovered Moravia – A 3-Day Cycling Adventure in the Heart of Pálava
Some trips stay with us for a lifetime. Not because of the kilometers we covered or the number of pictures we took, but because of the emotions, landscapes, and people we shared the road with. That’s exactly what happened during my first cycling trip to Moravia – a region I’ve returned to many times since. Because Moravia is not just a place. It’s a state of mind.
From Racibórz to Břeclav: where it all began
We left Racibórz on a chilly August morning. A train to Bohumín, then a direct connection to Břeclav, just across the Czech border. From there, our three-day journey began – bikes packed, maps ready, and no hotel bookings. Just an open mind and the road ahead.
Day 1: Lednice, the lake and a wine cellar stay
Our first destination was Lednice – a magical town known for its UNESCO-listed chateau and gardens. Riding past vineyards and scenic countryside, we reached the lake between Strachotín, Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov. On Sklepní Street in Pavlov, we found a row of wine cellars and small local pubs overlooking the water and the Pálava hills. We stayed overnight in a nearly renovated guesthouse just above one of the cellars. Wine in hand, laughter in the air – it was the perfect first evening.
Day 2: Vineyards, Mikulov and Valtice
Next morning, we cycled along the lake, through Pasohlávky, admiring the ruins of the Děvičky Castle. Through vineyards and sunlit hills, we reached Mikulov – a stunning town with a historic center, castle, and the iconic Holy Hill. Later, we arrived in Valtice – the wine capital of South Moravia, home to the National Wine Salon and another beautiful castle. We slept in summer cottages above the town. In the evening, we joined a traditional folk celebration in the main square – music, dancing, local food and wine. Pure magic.
Day 3: Farewell breakfast and train home
The last day was all about soaking in the final moments. A relaxed breakfast, short ride around the area, and then the train ride back to Racibórz. Tired but fulfilled. That feeling you only get when something truly special has just ended.
Why Moravia?
Because it’s close. Because it’s beautiful. Because cycling there is pure joy. No need to book in advance – just ride, knock on doors, and discover hidden gems. The food is hearty, the wine is excellent, and the people are warm and welcoming. Most of all – Moravia has soul. The kind you’ll want to return to again and again.
